William Francis Briody
Eureka Times Standard Obituary
January 28, 2011
was born in Lockport, New
York, on July 26, 1924. He died on January 23, 2011, at the age
of 86. Bill left home, at a young age, to join the Merchant
Marines and was stationed off the coast of Japan at the time of
the bombing of Hiroshima in August of 1945. After his discharge,
he lived in the San Francisco area for several years before
eventually moving to Eureka, where he would spend the biggest
part of his life. He initially became involved in commercial
fishing and diving as well as free diving for abalone. During
the 50's and early 60's, he owned and operated Briody's
Appliance Center in the Myrtletown area, closing the business in
1965 and moving back to San Francisco to seek a law degree.
After passing the Bar exam, he set up an office on 7th Street in
Eureka and maintained a law practice for 23 years. Working
alongside him during some of those years was his wife, Martha,
whom he had married in 1980. After retirement, they moved to
Willow Creek, Ca, where they enjoyed substitute teaching at
Hoopa High School. In 2002, they made what would be their final
move to Bracey, Virginia to be near family. Because of his love
for children, Bill again did some substitute teaching, and he
also did some driving for dialysis patients while in his 80's.
He will be remembered by all for his big smile and good humor.
Bill was preceded in death by his
parents, Francis Matthew Briody and Edna Mae Quinlavin.
He is survived by his wife, Martha; his four children: Jim, Dan,
Jean, and Michael; His brother, James T. Briody (Joan) and their
four children; four step-daughters and (spouses): Jennith
(Brett) Hoyt, Terry (Joe) Mertens, Marty (Keith) Loftis, Jamie
(Brett) Johnson and 13 grandchildren. A memorial celebration of
Bill's life will be held at the Boydton Baptist Church in
Boydton, Virginia, on Friday, January 28, 2011. In lieu of
flowers please make donations to Hospital Hospitality House,
Attn Shawn Walker, 612 E. Marshall Street Richmond, VA 23219.

William "Bill" Briody Scroll #56- Rememberances from Frater Bruce
Marshall Scroll #23
Hey Mike:
Nope, only memories of a "Weststar" brand TV
which was an absolute lemon. I purchased it from his appliance store:
"Go to Briody's... waaaay out
on Myrtle Avenue." After he graduated from HSC circa 1965, both Bill and
his
(then) wife Joan went to law school. Some five
years later I ran into Joan on a plane back to Eureka from San
Francisco. She and Bill were history by then and Joan was working as an
attorney for a bonding house in the Bay Area.
Bill was on the house Board of Control during the
terms when Rene Vit and Marc LaFluer were house president, probably
about 1961 - 1962 since National required a Board before they would go
along with the purchase of the Laurel Drive house.
When I came back to Eureka in 2000 I would
occasionally hear of Bill offering store room law comments from his
place in Willow Creek. However, I never personally ran into him after I
graduated in 1964. The obit refers to his wife as Joan although it would
have had to have been another "Joan."
If we could find the scrap book that the Rook put
together circa 1961 - 62 it may have a picture of Bill and the Board,
along with Wallace Goad, et al.
Sorry, but beyond that the memory fades (time for
my glass of warm milk and an afternoon nap, following the noon nap ...
!!!).
